Antique French Farmhouse Hemp Daybed Mattress, Old European Homespun Linen
This is the second piece of textile history! This is a nubby slubby homespun linen hemp ‘Straw Bed’ mattress cover I was lucky enough to find about 4 years ago. I haven’t come across another that can touch the quality this stunning late 19th century textile. I have one more in the store and like that one long long ago it would have been stuffed with fresh straw making a wonderful place to offer a traveler to sleep or use for oneself. It does make a wonderful daybed mattress or cover when stuffed. It is a natural deep rich wet sand color, just sublime. There is one openings to push in the fresh straw, and naturally you could sew it up and make an opening at the top for a duvet cover. This textile is an exquisite heavy weight linen hemp, a very durable piece. It weighs approximately 7 lbs. You would have yards and yards of gorgeous upholstery fabric if you were to deconstruct it. I have washed it. Stuffed with a quilt it would make a great place to throw down along the edge of a stream and while away the day. It will last long enough to become a cherished family treasure handed down through generations.
